Open positions as senior lecturer (associate professor) in Innovation Studies at CIRCLE

CIRCLE is expanding and announces new positions as senior lecturer (associate professor) in Innovation Studies with tenure. The announcements regard at least one position in Innovation Studies in general and one position in Innovation Studies with a specific focus on Globalization of Innovation. The positions are full-time (100 %) permanent positions (first day of employment after agreement). The task associated with these positions is primarily research.

CIRCLE is an interdisciplinary research centre at Lund University in Sweden. Since its creation in 2004, CIRCLE has established itself as a leading international research centre focused on innovation studies. The research spans innovation systems and innovation policy in a global economy, globalization of innovation, entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as the interplay between innovation, evolution of firms’ competitive advantages and industrial dynamics. As of January 2013, CIRCLEs new director is Professor Ron Boschma.

Lund University, at which CIRCLE is placed, is highly ranked in many international comparisons of higher education, such as the QS ranking and the Times Higher Education World University Ranking. It has consistently been placed in the world’s top 100 universities in recent years (placed among the top 0.4% of the world’s universities). Lund University is also the highest ranked full-scale university in Scandinavia, according to the Times Higher Education 2012/2013 rankings.

Duties and research field
The task associated with these positions is primarily research. The holders of the positions are expected to contribute to two major projects, constituting CIRCLEs base financing: (i) Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Knowledge Creation – Dynamics in Globalizing Learning Economies, funded by the Swedish Research Council within the framework of the Linnaeus Research Programme, and (ii) Transformation and Growth in Innovation Systems: Innovation Policy for Global Competitiveness of SMEs and R&I Milieus, funded by VINNOVA within the framework of Core Funding of Centers for Innovation Systems Research.

The holder of the position with special focus on Globalization of Innovation is expected to contribute to the previous two projects particularly looking at processes of globalization of innovation in a broad sense, including research on the subfields global production and innovation networks, internationalization of R&D (including Offshoring of R&D), emerging multinationals and born-global SMEs and innovation, and global sourcing of knowledge and technology.

Other duties for these positions are to attract external funding for additional research, organization of research activities (such as conferences, special sessions, seminars and workshops). The holders of the positions may also be involved in teaching – in English or Swedish – at CIRCLE or at other centres and departments of Lund University. CIRCLE operates in English, and most courses offered by CIRCLE are also taught in English. Another duty is to pursue third task activities, i.e. to cooperate with society and to provide information on research and education. The successful candidates will also be expected to participate in the day-to-day activities at CIRCLE.

All CIRCLE research staff gets access to unique databases that may be used for research. These data comprise, for instance, longitudinal matched employer-employee data including all workers in Sweden with detailed information on individuals and firms, including inventors of patents identified through EPO patent data. Data are also matched to other sources such as several waves of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS), R&D surveys and international trade activities.

Basis of assessment
The following criteria will constitute the basis for the assessment of applicants for the positions:

  • Documented ability to conduct research of high international quality
  • Strong publication record
  • Documented ability to attract research funding and to initiate, organize and carry research projects and activities, individually as well as in cooperation with others
  • Pedagogical abilities and skills
  • Documented ability to engage and inform society at large, in relation to research, educational and developmental activities
  • Ability to work in teams and collaborate with others

Experience of working in interdisciplinary environments and taking a proactive role in the development of research ideas and activities will be considered merits.
